Facing declining ad revenue Tasty- a division of Buzzfeed- sought tangible products to monetize their audience. They wanted to create a customizable cookbook for Black Friday, leaving Superior 30 days to develop a unique solution. Superior utilized our structural design and programmatic processes in collaboration with Tasty to develop a ‘mass personalization’ program complete with packaging and shipping solutions. Superior was able to beat the Black Friday deadline with personalized cookbooks where customers selected 7 (of 20 possible) meal choices, the algorithm which was collaboratively developed then selected 50 recipes (of 120 total)- leading to 15 trillion possible options. Generating over $1 million in sales during the first month of launch.

FUNCTIONAL FASTENING

Binding is an essential print process which involves the fastening of individual sheets together. Superior is proud to offer a wide variety of print binding styles, ensuring we can find the right method for your organizations next project. Our experienced staff will walk you through the different binding styles highlighting the functionalities of each until we determine the correct style for your print project.
Mechanical

Mechanical

Mechanical book binding includes both Wire-O and Spiral methods. Wire-O binding provides an aesthetically pleasing, layflat piece where the pre punched sheets are bound by a closed wire. Conversely, Spiral binding has more flexibility and will not crush- proving ideal for mailing.
Adhesive

Adhesive

Adhesive, otherwise known as perfect binding, is predominantly used for paperback books. Books are trimmed and inserted into a cover along with adhesive backing to hold the pages and cover together.
Sewing

Sewn

Sewn book binding is one of the oldest forms of book binding and has passed the test of time due to its durability. Pages are bound together via pieces of thread and are adhered to the books spine. Sewn bound books are perceived as very high quality and lay flat when opened. Superior is also enthused to offer customers smyth sewn options.
Case Bound

Case Bound

Case book binding is a binding method often used for hardcover books. Its name derives from its construction, where pages are fabricated using a hard outside case for the perfect bind; however, this method requires specific book page numbers and types.
Saddle Stitching

Saddle Stitching

Typically reserved for books of 60 pages or less, saddle stitching refers to the binding method where pages are folded together on one side, then stapled at the fold line on the other side. Saddle stitching can be done with or without a book cover.
Folding and Gluing

Folding & Gluing

Folding and gluing transforms a flat piece of printed material into a finished product, such as packaging, boxes, envelopes, or promotional items. Finished products are constructed by folding the fat piece along pre-determined lines or creases then applying adhesive which holds the finished product together.
Non-Traditional

Non-Traditional

Superior also offers a vast array of non-traditional binding methods on a unique case basis. Services offered include: Singer sewn, padding, remoistenable glue, and tape binding.

PROJECT EXAMPLE

Superior developed and produced a unique, rugged looking book in order to showcase Jeep’s wrangler line. Jeep wanted this piece to exude their brand values and convey their intended identity to new and prospective customers. Superior created a sewn book with an exposed spine; featuring a foil stamped, partial chipboard cover that clearly displayed their brand identity.
